As Total Watch Reviews has become increasingly popular, a larger number of independent watchmakers are contacting me. From the outset, my website’s primary objective was to celebrate original design at all price points. For that reason I was very excited to receive images and technical information from a wonderful new brand called Remy Cruz. This company is the brainchild of Avant Garde designer Mengu Evrensel.
Over the last year I have featured many independent brands trying to make an impact on the market. Unfortunately some of the companies have not survived for various reasons. Nevertheless I applaud their tenacity and the integrity of their designs. From my recent conversations with Mengu Evrensel I can see he is determined to succeed in this highly competitive industry. His background was originally in business administration and international marketing. Principally he has combined his commercial experience with a love of art, jewellery and horology. In 2007 Mengu established Remy Cruz and developed a phenomenal debut piece called the Rébellion Sauvage. Currently the business operates from subsidiary office in Belgium and a primary office in Turkey.
The Rébellion Sauvage is the company’s debut model and has taken nearly seven years to develop. Ultimately this illustrates the level of perfection Mengu Evrensel is trying to attain. Dimensionally the watch is larger than average measuring 50mm x 40mm x 11.60mm. These generous proportions are designed to make a statement and will definitely appeal to masculine buyers. I also envisage the timepiece would feel comfortable and lightweight on the wrist. Primarily this is down to the innovative case design and use of high performance grade 5 titanium in production. Realistically this watch would be an ideal companion for both casual and formal occasions.
Visually the Rébellion Sauvage has a very distinctive and original appearance. The multi-layered façade is striking and gives the timepiece real depth. What makes this watch so special is the handmade 1700’s style “chartouché” dial pattern (which can be customized on request) finished in luxurious 18 Karat yellow gold. I love the revolving central hour disc and the stylish brass minute/second hands. Other successful features include a PVD treated bezel with five screws and an oversized top mounted crown. Overall design is very accomplished and the level of finishing is, first rate.
To power the watch, Remy Cruz has equipped it with a superior Swiss made twin barrel automatic movement sourced from Technotime. The Caliber TT738.00 comprises 35-jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This intricate mechanism is perfectly showcased through the sapphire crystal exhibition case back. Functionally the Rébellion Sauvage features hours, minutes and seconds. The watch also features an impressive power reserve of 120 hours and is water resistant to a depth of 100m metres.
The Rébellion Sauvage is limited to only 99 pieces and has a superior hand stitched black calf leather strap. Priced at: CHF 9,800 (approximately $11,172).
