Jean Richard Aeroscope

Over the last few years’ legendary watchmakers have inspired many luxury goods companies. Essentially they are paying tribute to these exceptional craftsmen by honouring their spirit. It also makes great marketing sense, as buyers love a cover story. I have written two articles for Luxurious Magazine featuring Arnold & Son, (which pays homage to the skills of John Arnold) and high Swiss brand Louis Moinet (that celebrates the extraordinary talents of Louis Moinet). Another great example is Swiss watch manufacturer Jean Richard.

Jean Richard derives its name from the 17th century watchmaker Daniel Jean Richard. Based in the region between La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, Switzerland he established his own workshop dedicated to fine watchmaking. He was also regarded by his contemporaries as a pioneer due to the fact he invented his own machines and tools. Subsequently Daniel’s grandson Louis Jean Richard also became a distinguished watchmaker. Presently the modern day business has no historic links to the past.  Nevertheless they do produce a range of innovative timepieces with a substantial amount of design merit.

Currently the company is managed by CEO Bruno Grande and is part of the Sowind Group (who also own Girard Perregaux). In my opinion the two brands compliment each other as they are marketed at different price points. Recently I had the pleasure of reviewing the GP Hawk Diver and Chrono Hawk, which I found to be a stimulating experience. Jean Richard’s Aeroscope has similar dimensions to both of these timepieces measuring 44mm x 12.67mm. On that basis I feel the watch will appeal to a broad demographic of buyers. I also really enjoyed wearing this timepiece because it was lightweight and sat perfectly on my wrist. Primarily this is down to the elegant cushion shape case and choice of high performance titanium used in production. Realistically this watch could be worn for any occasion and is definitely a practical option for daily usage.

Within the Aeroscope collection there are many striking models each with a choice of different dials and straps. The version I tried on was the natural satin finished titanium case with black dial. I love the overall attention to detail, especially the contrasting bold orange numerals and distinctive open worked hour/minute hands. Other exciting details include the chronograph counters and carbon fiber composite pushers. There is also a really stylish engraved rotating bezel with black markers. Overall the watch has really sporty appearance and finishing is absolutely first rate.

To power the watch Jean Richard has developed a sophisticated self-winding movement. The Caliber JR66 comprises 43 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. On this particular model there is an engraved screw down case titanium back so the mechanism is not visible. Functionally the Aeroscope features hours, minutes, chronograph and small second located at the 3 o’clock position. The watch also has a power reserve of 42-hours and is water resistant to a depth 100 meters.

The Aeroscope has an orange rubber strap with stainless steel folding buckle. Priced at: $5,600
