GoS Watches (Gustafsson and Sjögren) is a small independent watchmaker located in the idyllic location of Linköping, Sweden. In 2007 Johan Gustafsson and Patrik Sjögren combined a shared passion for traditional Scandinavian craftsmanship to develop their own unique brand. Even though the company was established only six years ago they have gained enormous respect throughout the industry.
Both Johan Gustafsson’s and Patrik Sjögren’s skillset are integral to the success of the business. In 2007 he received exceptional grades and awards from the Swedish watchmaker school. Prior to this Patrik’s expertise was in engineering and science, which enabled him to solve any technical issues that arose. Johan is a trained bladesmith and knifemaker. This fascination for the art of steel craft has been vital in the evolution of the company. Every watch case is meticulously hand decorated to the highest level, making each timepiece an individual piece of art.
A few months ago I wrote an article about the immensely talented Stephan Sarpaneva, who originates from Finland. In my opinion there are a lot of similarities between Stepan and Gos Watches. Both of these watchmakers are located in Scandinavia and produce a seriously limited amount of timepieces a year. They have also developed a cult following on social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. It is pertinent to mention that all their creations are unique and instantly recognisable.
The majority of Johan Gustafsson’s and Patrik Sjögren’s timepieces have a seasonal theme. Previous models have included the Nordic Seasons (Spring, Autumn, Winter, Summer) and the Winter Nights. Their latest timepiece is the absolutely sublime Midnight Sun. Measuring a respectable 45mm x 10mm this watch should appeal to a wide variety of buyers. Due to the reduced thickness of the case (compared to other editions) the timepiece should sit very comfortably on the wrist. I also feel it would be suitable to wear on both formal and casual occasions.
What I love about the new Midnight Sun is its pure simplicity and choice of high quality materials. The case is constructed from Damascus steel which was traditionally used in Middle Eastern Sword making. Its distinctive and attractive appearance is reminiscent of flowing water. The dial is composed of solid 18 karat gold with an intricate sunray pattern. Other integral elements of the design include the forged steel hands and chapter ring. Overall the minimalistic façade is effective because it doesn’t divert the attention from the superior craftsmanship.
Beneath the sublime exterior lies a manual winding caliber ETA 6498. This movement comprises 17 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour. Swiss company Soprod have refinished and improved to chronometer grade. The mechanism (which is visible through the sapphire crystal case back) has been customised and skeletonised by the extraordinary talented Jochen Benzinger. His remarkable achievements with high-end luxury watchmaker Grieb & Benzinger are legendary. The Midnight Sun features hours, minutes and is water resistant to a depth of 10 metres.
The Midnight Sun comes supplied with a premium Nubuck leather strap and handmade birch wooden box. With numbers limited to only five pieces this watch will surely entice the discerning collector. Priced at: €17,000 (approximately $23,033).
