Azimuth SP-1 Landship

It is amazing to think a company as progressive as Azimuth was founded only eight years ago. In 2005 the dynamic Alvin Lye and Christopher Long established this exciting brand. This distinctive name was derived from a mathematical term, which characterises the arc of the horizon from a reference point. Presently their headquarters are located in Singapore with a manufacturing facility based in Lac de Bienne Switzerland.

Like all great watchmakers their concepts begin with detailed drawings. At this stage the process is handed over to a product development team who generate more complex three dimensional computer visuals. When I recently spoke to Alvin Lye he explained that the company’s philosophy is to combine exciting designs with high quality Swiss craftsmanship. This refreshing approach is evident in all their creations including the exceptional SP-1 Landship. It is pertinent to mention this watch was first showcased at Baselworld 2011 as a prototype. The model I am reviewing is the finalised version released in 2012/13.

I have been a huge admirer of the brand for many years especially the innovative SP-1 Mechanique series of watches. Although I have tried on a few models in the range nothing makes an impact quite like the formidable SP-1 Landship. This piece measures a colossal 51mm x 44mm x 20mm excluding the huge crown. Incredibly the watch was comfortable to wear and sat perfectly on my modest size wrists. This is down to the ingenious design and use of lightweight titanium in production. Realistically these massive dimensions and the radical design won’t appeal to everyone. Personally I love its muscular proportions and thoroughly enjoyed wearing the watch.

The combat tanks used by the British Army in the First World War inspired the unique styling of the SP-1 Landship. I love the minimalistic façade of the timepiece incorporating rivets into the design. This gives the watch a rugged industrial appearance that is highly effective. Time is presented via an upright turret displaying the hours and a vertical window displaying the retrograde minutes. The attention to detail on this magnificent timepiece is absolutely first rate and perfectly executed.

Underneath the robust exterior of the watch lies an in house modified ETA 2824-2 calibre. This self-winding mechanical movement comprises 25 jewels and oscillates at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Functionally the timepiece features a wandering hour facility and minutes. The watch also has a power reserve of 38 hours and is water resistant to a depth of 30 meters. Ultimately telling the time is almost secondary on this sensational timepiece as the silhouette of the SP-1 Landship is truly mind blowing.

The imposing SP-1 Landship is supplied with an integrated rubber strap and customized folding clasp. Azimuth originally limited the manufacture of the watch to100 pieces for 2012/2013. Due to the enormous success of this model more will be produced in 2014. The suggested retail price is: $8,799.99.
