In todays market the consumer preference is gravitating towards larger bolder watches. Over the last few years’ brands have fulfilled these demands by producing some incredibly bold timepieces. Excitingly the integrity of the design hasn’t been compromised. Here are 5 watches proving the point that sometimes bigger is better.
U-Boat U-1942
The brand U-Boat is widely associated with the production of bold & oversized watches. The U-1942 to date is the largest wristwatch they’ve ever produced measuring a staggering 65mm in diameter excluding the crown. This amazing timepiece originated from detailed drawings inherited from owner Italo Fontana’s grandfather. The case of this distinctive timepiece is constructed from grade 5 titanium, making the piece both strong & lightweight. I love the simplicity of the design, which I feel embodies the philosophy behind the company. This imposing watch is a limited edition of 29 & has recently been sported by the Terminator himself-Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Horological Machine No2
There is no denying that Max Busser designs & produce a range of highly innovative watches. His creations always excite & stimulate the senses including the phenomenal Horological Machine No2. This superb watch measures an imposing 59mm x 38mm x 13mm exclusive of the crown & lugs. The design is minimalistic but also very effective. I personally love the large dual dials displaying the extensive range of functions. Jean-Marc Wiederrecht developed the movement comprising 44 jewels & 349 components. The timepiece is available in a choice of different material options.
Azimuth SP-1 Landship
Singapore based watch brand Azimuth produce an eclectic range of thought provoking designs. The SP-1 Landship is one of the company’s newest offerings & perfectly highlights this point. The case on this watch measures a formidable 51mm x 44mm x 20mm (excluding the crown) & is carefully constructed out of lightweight titanium. Time is presented via an upright drum displaying the hours & vertical window displaying the retrograde minutes. Underneath the watch’s futuristic façade lies an ETA Swiss automatic movement. This awesome timepiece is limited to only 100 pieces.
Ritmo Mvndo Persepolis 202/2 Blue Xerxes
These are highly stylized & striking range of watches designed by Ali Soltani, owner of LA based Ritmo Mvndo. The Persepolis is the flagship model from a company normally associated with fashion inspired watches. This exciting range comes in numerous different colour combinations including jewel-encrusted versions. I recently reviewed the fantastic 202 SS BLACK that I found to be a very stimulating experience. The dimensions certainly match its imposing appearance measuring an impressive 52.5mm x 20mm. The 202/2 Blue Xerxes has a super cool façade & is a limited edition of 50 pieces.
Angular Momentum Magnus Bronze Diver
Martin Pauli is an exceptional Swiss watchmaker producing a range of beautiful highly original watches. The Magnus Bronze Diver was meticulously made to the customer’s specifications & as a result the composition works perfectly. This magnificent timepiece is entirely constructed from bronze & has an enormous diameter of 60mm. The design is minimalistic & I feel this adds to the watch’s charm. Hours are displayed via luminous dots on the oversized rotating bezel. Powering this watch is a mechanical self-winding movement visible through the Sapphire crystal case back.
